Looking after Sterling Silver jewellery
All of my Jewellery is made from Recycled Sterling Silver and it will need to be looked after. Sterling Silver is an alloy that is 92.5% Silver and 7.5% other alloys - mainly copper. It is these other alloys that toughen it up making it suitable for use as jewellery. But because of these it will naturally tarnish.
Some of my jewellery is oxidised (a black/dark grey finish). This can gradually wear away over time, creating more of an antique look. If this does happen and you would like your piece re-oxidising then please contact me.
Here are a few tips to help you keep your jewellery looking beautiful.
- Keep your silver jewellery in its box
I would recommend keeping your silver jewellery in the box provided as it has an anti-tarnish layer so this will slow down the tarnishing process. Store your jewellery carefully as exposure to excess heat or damp conditions will cause your jewellery to tarnish.
If your jewellery is oxidised I would recommend storing it separately to your other jewellery.
- Avoid perfumes and chemicals
Try and avoid perfumes, cosmetics and household chemicals when wearing your jewellery.
- Clean your handmade jewellery carefully
To keep handmade jewellery looking as fresh and beautiful as the day it was made, it is important to ensure you remove traces of your skin's oils, grease and daily grime from the surface. You don't want to be too rough, though, as silver can mark and scratch. Always use professional products and cloths to ensure it stays stunning for longer.
